Mountain Bike Tracks
MTB in Det Sydfynske Øhav (The South Funen Archipelago)
Since 2014 Naturturisme I/S has been working on several fronts to create a sustainable development in the mountain bike area on Funen and the islands, where use and protection goes hand-in-hand.
The primary mountain bike projects that the organisation is working on are:
- The Logger: construction of a commercial MTB track in Egebjerg Bakker in cooperation with Hvidkilde Estate (Hvidkilde Gods) and a local track club.
- Svendborg Mountainbikespor: a public track in the forests east of Svendborg.
In addition, Naturturisme I/S has had a counselling function to Valdemar’s Castle (Valdemars Slot) regarding their construction of the MTB track at Bregninge (Dådyrsporet). Naturturisme I/S has also assisted Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality in designing a MTB track in Pipstorn Forest (Pipstorn Skov).
Background and Purpose
Mountain biking is one of the most popular sports in Denmark, and it is growing fast. With a hilly landscape like the one in South Funen, this development creates a new potential in nature tourism that Naturturisme I/S naturally is assisting.
The growing interest for MTB tracks is simultaneously creating a challenge in form of a growing pressure on natural areas and ancient monuments, as well as increasing disputes between landowners and other users of the nature.
Possibilities and Advantages
New and attractive MTB tracks support the MTB sport and stimulate new users to try it out and to get active experiences in the nature. Especially national and international experiences have shown that the establishment of formal and correctly constructed MTB tracks can accommodate the challenges of an increased MTB traffic.
